Prostate Cancer Conversation Helper
An empathetic AI agent designed to navigate sensitive healthcare dialogues. Built with a focus on Canadian data sovereignty, hallucination mitigation, and omnichannel integration.
The Challenge
Healthcare conversations are notoriously high-friction and high-sensitivity. The client needed an AI solution that could provide 24/7 empathetic support to prostate cancer patients and their families without violating strict Canadian data privacy laws or providing unsafe medical advice.
The Solution
1. Data Sovereignty First
Unlike standard GPT implementations that route data through US-based servers, I architected this system to run on a private Canadian datacenter. This ensured full compliance with national healthcare data standards while leveraging serverless agents to maintain low latency and high scalability.
2. Guardrails & System Prompting
To mitigate the risk of hallucinations and ensure safe, empathetic dialogue, I leveraged guardrails. In tandem with this, I engineered a highly-tuned system prompt to strictly guide the agent's behavior, speech patterns, and operational rules. A significant architectural challenge during development was navigating the strict character limits of DigitalOcean's AI for system prompts, which required intense prompt optimization to ensure absolute safety and empathy without exceeding the platform's constraints.
3. Omnichannel Accessibility
I developed the integration layers to deploy the assistant directly where users already are: Facebook and Facebook Messenger. This reduced the barrier to entry, allowing patients to get support in a familiar, low-stress environment.
Technical Execution
- Agentic Logic: Built with LangChain and Node.js for complex dialogue management.
- Observability: Integrated Langfuse for detailed interaction logging and performance evaluation.
- Automated QA: Developed simulated personas (various ages, genders, and stages of illness) to stress-test the AI's empathy and accuracy before production deployment.
