The Vision

Virgin Mobile needed a high-visibility activation in the heart of Toronto. The goal: a video booth that could capture fun stories, encode them instantly, and deliver them to a custom-branded website for social sharing.

Engineering the Experience

1. Automated Encoding Pipeline

I implemented a robust middle-end solution using FFMPEG to handle the automated encoding of raw video files from the kiosk cameras into web-ready formats. This was 2010—real-time video processing at the edge was a significant technical hurdle.

2. Secure Asset Delivery

I developed the encryption protocols for the delivery of multimedia files from the physical kiosk to the cloud. This ensured that user data remained private during the transfer to the management backend.

3. Integrated Web Platform

Built with CakePHP, the web platform allowed users to view their unique videos via a link in a personalized email. The backend also included a full management and moderation suite for Virgin Mobile's marketing team.

Cultural Impact

The booth was a flagship success, launched and personally used by Sir Richard Branson. It demonstrated the power of bridging physical event space with a seamless, automated digital delivery loop.
